Melbourne Biomedical Precinct - Parkville Hospitals

1:50 PM CASE STUDY: The Big Bang Approach – Implementing a Shared EMR System to Create Value for Consumers in Parkville

The much anticipated Parkville EMR project will unite the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Royal Women’s Hospital and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre onto a shared and centralised EMR system, servicing 14% of all clinicians within the Melbourne Biomedical Precinct. With reference to best practice in the United States, Jackie will outline their EMR vision and strategy with a particular focus on:

  • The pros and cons of a shared partnership model for implementing EMR and implementing with a “big bang”
  • Overcoming challenges such as managing and reconciling stark differences in governance and ICT infrastructure, establishing patient and provider identity and culture change management
  • Developing local teams within each hospital who will understand the impact first hand, be accountable for change and adoption and collaborate with a centralised team
  • Shared benefits as a result of collaborative efforts, including greater visibility and accessibility patient records across all three hospitals
